Just 35 km from Bangalore city, in the forest, is a small and quiet village called Nrityagram inhabited exclusively by women. The word "nrityagram" means "little village" and characterizes this place. The founder of the settlement in 1990 became Protima Gauri – famous performer of Odissi dance. The village is a unique campus where constantly live and learn the art of Indian dance small number of girls.
On-site Nrityagram is the building of the school of dance, as well as residential premises. All these buildings are made exclusively from natural materials such as wood, stone, clay. Their food pupils grow their own, and sew clothes with their own hands. A resident of the village prefer to live in harmony with nature, arguing that only nature can inspire sincere dance, which will be able to touch the heart and soul of the viewer.
Despite the fact that Protima Gauri died in 1998, her lives now. The village Nrityagram has become a very popular place, lots of girls eager to be part of this big family. But the recruitment of new students is conducted every 6 years, and only six lucky can be selected.
Nrityagram – absolutely unique, incomparable a place where even the air is filled with the spirit of dance. The village has no Newspapers, no television, no Internet, there's just dance, which was for girls meaning life. Though the inhabitant of the village and seem to be cut off from the world, but actually it is not. In Nrityagram often have guests and tourists, and women themselves from time to time go on tours. They are happy to show their skills to people, but you should know that their statements they are not allowed to photograph it, as it does not want they invented movements were copied.
