National art Museum of Catalonia was formed in 1990 through the merger of the collections owned by the Museum of modern art and the Museum of art of Catalonia. The Museum is housed in the building of the National Palace (Palau Nacional), which was built for the opening of the first world Exhibition in 1929 and is situated at the foot of Montjuic.

The Museum has a huge collection of works from various fields of art, covering a long period of time. There are collections of the Romanesque period in art, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque. Collection of romanticism collected in this Museum, is the largest in the world. Here presents outstanding works of that time, recognized as a truly unique. Particularly striking collection of wall paintings - frescoes. Exhibition of works of the Gothic period 13-15 ages presents paintings, stone sculptures, carvings in stone and wood, amazing stained glass Windows. The periods of the Renaissance and Baroque, was one of the most exciting, but at the same time not the most significant in the art of Catalunya, represented by the works of outstanding Spanish, Flemish, Italian painters. Among them are works by Goya, Velazquez, Rubens, El Greco and others. In the National Museum of art also exhibits contemporary art of the late 19th - early 20th century, which includes paintings, photographs, samples of applied art. In this exposition there is the famous painting of Pablo Picasso's "Woman in hat and fur collar".

There is also a collection of coins, medals and paper money, as well as a collection of prints and drawings. Work at the Museum of art and the universal library, it also caters for restoration work.
