The tower and Church de Manente Photo: the Tower and the Church de Manente

The tower and Church de Manente are in the city of Barcelos, which is the center of the homonymous municipality, which is in the district of Braga. The patron Saint of this district is St Martin of tours, or, as it is called, Martin the Merciful.

In Barcelos in ancient times there was a monastery of St. Martin, which, unfortunately, to the present time only the tower and the Church de Manente. Not preserved information about the construction date of the temple, but there is an assumption that the monastery was built in the first half of the tenth century. It was founded by don Pedro Afonso, Torres and his wife, Donna of Gotinga Aeris. After their death, the monastery took care of their daughter, Teresa Pires, who was married to a famous nobleman from County Condado Portucalense - Ramiro Arishem. County is the name of two fiefdoms that existed in 868-1139 years on the territory of modern Portugal, and they were called Condado de Portukale and the Condado Portucalense. Second, the County was larger in area than the first and was established in 1093 Alfonso VI of Castile.

The monastery Church was built in Romanesque style, some even attended pre-Romanesque elements. On the wall of the Church you can see the inscription, which dates from the year 1117 and States that supervised the construction work of the master gonçalo. The portal of the Church is decorated with three round arches, decorated with a pattern of geometric elements. The tower has a square shape and was a watch-tower. In 1915 the Church and tower were declared a national monument of Portugal.
