Nemunas is the largest river in Latvia. For some time the river was especially important waterway, and was the breadwinner and protector of the nation. At the moment the river Nemunas is not only the largest river, but also a source of tourist resources of the business. In addition, the river is an inseparable element of the Lithuanian landscape, and the Keeper of the historical memory, which for many generations is carefully stored under the waters of the river Nemunas.

The greatest interest represents the river in its middle reaches. This part of the Nemunas is a particularly valuable and amazingly beautiful stretch of river. More than 70 years ago began the discussion of the proposal concerning the reason for this location of the National Park. But as years went by, and only in 1992 was founded and began operating the Regional Park of the bends of the Nemunas.

The total area of the Park was 25 thousand ha. the Largest part of the area, namely 67%, is covered by dense forests, which include Prienai Bohr, the famous Sipanska forest, Punski boron reserve and many others. The Park has in its stock the seventeen sanctuaries, a large number of natural, historical and cultural sites. Especially picturesque places open when looking at these historically important places as birštonas or Punia, where you can admire the beautiful views of the valleys and winding and fast-flowing rivers.

The most critical point regional Park are large loops of the Nemunas, which so mysteriously waving in all directions. Even in ancient times, the rivermen and the raftsmen were always so confused in the field winding river bends of the Nemunas. The river formed a very deep, for this reason, the river landscape is especially peculiar that attracts many tourists.
