Amphitheatre, nestled on the hillside Goktepe, was built in the IV century BC when Mausolus and contained about 13 thousand spectators. In 1973, after the on-site amphitheatre archaeological site, it was turned into a Museum under the open sky. Recently the company "Turkcell" and "Ericsson" has completed a large collaborative project of the restoration of this unique building, begun in 2000 under the leadership of Museum of underwater archaeology Bodrum. Previous restoration work 1976-1985 were stopped due to the termination of funding of the project.
Most visible to visitors of the new stage of the restoration was the entrance to the tunnel, which was discovered during the previous works, but it wasn't until the end opened and studied to date. It is expected that this tunnel leads into the ancient tomb.
