Regional archaeological Museum was founded in 1918. In June 2007, the Museum moved into a new, purpose-built building in the centre of Braga. The Museum collection includes artifacts from archaeological sites Dating from the Paleolithic to the middle ages. Regional archaeological Museum is called the Museum Diego de Sauce.
Diego de Sauce was an Archbishop and a prominent political figure of Braga in the XVI century. He did a lot of good for the city, turning the medieval town in the ideal city of the Renaissance: expanded streets, built the gardens and new churches, founded hospitals, reconstructed Cathedral of the city. The Archbishop was fond of antique pieces. Diego de Sauce initiated the creation of the Museum in order to protect the archaeological heritage of Braga, but the Museum was established only in the early twentieth century and was called the Museum of the history of art and archaeology.
The Museum worked irregularly, and only in 1980, the Museum began to work constantly and was renamed the Regional archaeological Museum. Since that time, the Museum has focused its activities on the protection of local and regional archaeological heritage, as well as at exhibitions.
The exhibits are located in four halls. In the first room visitors can see a collection of items, ranging from the Paleolithic to the bronze age. In the second and third exhibit halls tell about the development of Bracara Augusta, a Roman settlement, later to become the city of Braga. In the fourth room you can have a closer look at the religious art of the early medieval, Romanesque and Gothic period.
