The Episcopal Palace Photo: Bishop's Palace

The Episcopal Palace of Braga rightly tops the list of most attractive places in the city. It is impossible to accurately classify the time period of this Palace, since the reconstruction of the building occurred from the 14th century to 17th century. Today, the Palace houses one of the oldest libraries of Portugal, which has more than 10 thousand 300 thousand manuscripts and books. Also, the Palace houses the rectorate of the University of Minho and district archives.

The Palace is near similar to the fortress Cathedral CE. The building was built in the late 14th century and once was the residence of bishops. The Episcopal Palace is composed of three different buildings, each of which has its own characteristics and built at different times. These buildings built in the Gothic style, Baroque and mannerism style.

East wing opens onto the garden of St. Barbara, which was founded in the 14th century, the West wing overlooks the Town square and was built in the 18th century in the Portuguese Baroque style. The South wing is bordered Palace square and consists of a variety of buildings, dates of construction which date back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. In the North wing, which was built in 1160, is a large and beautiful hall, where the Archbishop was wont to take its visitors, and there was also his chambers.

Over the long history of the Palace has seen many changes in its buildings. After restoration works that were carried out in the early 16th century, the Palace became home to the Royal Lord Lieutenant Dovre. Then in the Palace was the main military warehouse in the city. For centuries the Palace was looted repeatedly, and there were fires, but each time the building was restored.
