A large Market in the 9th district - the oldest and largest indoor market in Budapest. It is located at the end of the famous pedestrian shopping street váci utca on the pest side of Liberty bridge. The idea of building a large market in Budapest belonged to the first mayor of Budapest Karl Kammermeyer, it was his largest investment project. Upon his retirement in 1896 at the end of construction, he participated in the opening ceremony as a citizen.
The market building was designed and built in 1897. The market consists of a huge number of kiosks located on three floors. The entrance gate in the Gothic revival style have touch control. A distinctive architectural feature of the building is the roof, from colorful jelnicki tiles. The building area is 10,000 square meters.
And the First and Second world wars was not spared the famous market. In both periods he was completely damaged, and in the next few years did not work. Restoration work conducted in the 1990-ies, returned to the market its original splendor. Today, a Large market is one of the popular tourist attractions of the city.
The market is open on all days except Sundays from 6 am Monday to 5 PM, from Tuesday to Friday until 6pm and Saturday until 3 PM.
