When visiting Budva you may not even notice the Catholic Church of the virgin Mary, who gave the name of the Budva Citadel. This ancient temple, built in the IX century, is a continuation of a wall, and at first glance it is impossible to say that this is the House of God. The full name of this Church sounds like Santa Maria in Punta.

The legend accompanying this temple, says that the Spanish monks that spread around the world the Christian faith, arriving to the beach in Budva 840 year, mounted on the wall icon of the virgin Mary, around which lit the candles. At the call of the monks, many Christians living in the city, came to worship her. At this point it was decided to build a Church in honor of the aforementioned icons.

One of the attractions of this region is a real inscription left on the wall by the monks in the construction of the Church in the mid-ninth century. The whole Eastern coast of the Adriatic, this inscription is the oldest.

The Church of the virgin Mary in the fourteenth century was owned by the Franciscan monastic order, and operated it until 1807, when entered the city of Napoleon's troops never made it to the stables. Acoustic system of this Church is unique, so there are now often held various musical evenings.

Another feature of this Church is that it has a common wall with the Orthodox Church of Saint Sava, which in our day is also not valid.
