Clares Church officially named the Church of the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary. Previously his heavenly patrons was considered to be the Holy Spirit, Saint Wojciech, Saint Clare and Saint Barbara. The temple is located on the street of Gdansk.
The place where was built a modern Church, not empty. In 1448 the inhabitants of Bydgoszcz raised funds for the erection of the Church of the Holy spirit which was believed to be sick. The Church was built of oak wood, but in 1582 made her stone. Construction of the new Church lasted until 1618. Finished sponsoring decor already sisters, the poor Clares monastery which appeared in Bydgoszcz three years earlier. The temple of the Holy spirit was given to them by the city. Interestingly, the design of the Church was not satisfied with the nuns, so they invited the architect for the alteration of the Church. The old nave of the building was attached to another room, combined them into one and changed the location of the main entrance. In 1646 the Church built a chapel, which can still be seen, and the crypt, where are buried the poor Clares. In 40-ies of the XVII century the Church was attached to the tower is equipped with Windows-loopholes through which it was possible if necessary to shoot the enemy.
In 1835 Bydgoszcz came under the rule of Prussia. The poor Clares left the city, all the property was owned by the city authorities. The mayor decided to close the Church of the poor Clares, and his furniture and religious items to split between other local churches. Why not only served as a former Church: there was a store, then a warehouse, then a fireman post. The new owners redid the room to suit your needs.
Only in 1920, the Church was returned to believers.
In the design of the facade of the temple you can see Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features. The oldest masonry preserved behind the altar: it dates from the year 1582. The ceiling of the nave is decorated with wooden panels 112, which depict biblical characters. The main altar was created in 1636 and decorated with the image of the assumption of our lady. The wooden pulpit in Rococo style made in the XVIII century.
