National Carillon, Chimes or one of the world's largest belfries, consisting of 53 bells. Located on aspen island in Central Canberra. 50-foot Carillon is a gift of the British government on the 50th anniversary of the founding of Canberra. At the Grand opening on April 26, 1970 was attended by Queen Elizabeth II.
Generally, the Carillon is, like the body, difficult and expensive musical instrument – it requires to individual buildings. Choose bells of the Carillon are fixed, and their tongues connected to the keyboard. In 2004, the Australian Carillon was slightly renovated – the designers have updated the interior and added 2 new bells. Each of 55 the bells of the Carillon weighs from 7 pounds up to 6 tons. Together, they chromatically take 4, 5 octave.
The bells in the Carillon ringing every 15 minutes and every hour playing a small melody. Play a variety of music – from classical to folk motifs. It is believed that the best place to listen to the sound of bells, in a radius of 100 meters from the tower, although the sound carries much further – in the Parliamentary triangle (the government buildings), the Kingston and civic.
In addition to the wonderful music that can be heard in the Carillon, you can also climb to a small observation deck, which overlooks lake Burley Griffin and Canberra city centre.
