Castle Hochosterwitz is considered one of the most impressive medieval castles in Austria. Set on a cliff in vysote meters near the town of St. Georgen in Carinthia. On a clear day, the castle is visible from a distance of 30 kilometers.

The first documentary mention of the castle dates back to the year 860. While Slovenian castle bore the title "Ascorbic". In the 11th century Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg gave the castle of the noble family of Sponheim in exchange for their support in solving important problems. And Sponheim gave land to the family of Hosterwitz in 1209.

In the 15th century, the last Scion of Osterlitz was captured during the Turkish invasion and died in 1476 in prison without issue. Thus, after four centuries, may 30, 1478, castle returned into the possession of the Habsburgs, the Emperor Frederick III. In the following thirty years, the castle was damaged by numerous Turkish campaigns. October 5, 1509 Emperor Maximilian I gave the castle as the Bishop of Gurk.

In 1541, king Ferdinand I granted the castle to the Governor of Carinthia Christopher Khevenhiiller. In 1571 Baron Georg Khevenhuller acquired the fortress. It strengthened her, fearing a Turkish invasion, has created an Arsenal of and gate 14. Such massive fortifications are considered unique in the construction of citadels. The legend says that the castle was never conquered.
