Sankt Veit an der Glan is an Austrian town located in Carinthia, is the capital of the district of the same name.The earliest evidence of settlements on the territory of the municipality is the fragment of the wall of the medieval building. According to legend, the founding of the city was preceded by the battle against the Hungarians in 901 year. Duke Bernhard Spanheim (1202-1256) built in the village of castle St. Vitus, which was described in documents as a Fort. With 1205, in the village began to mint coins. In 1224 St. Veit received the status of the city and the Board of jurors. In 1335 Carinthia passed into the possession of the Habsburgs, St. Vitus and the castle lost its importance. During the five invasions of the Turks in the period from 1473 to 1492, the city was partially destroyed and burned.
In 1713 and 1715, the plague raged in Sankt Veit an der Glan. During the reign of Joseph II, the city experienced an economic downturn, and by 1830 the city had only 1500 inhabitants, while in the middle ages was about 3000. The economic recovery began in the 19th century after the construction of the railway and start trading wood.
In 1939, about 900 armed Nazis tried to seize the city, however, they failed to occupy it completely.
In the Old town has preserved its historical buildings, including a beautifully decorated late Gothic town hall in 1486 buildings on the main square of the city; the parish Church of the Holy Trinity of the 12th century, rebuilt after the fire of 1829, but it has elements of Romanesque and Gothic style, the monastery Church of the virgin Mary from the 14th century, the Ducal castle, the castle of Tannenberg, etc.
Today, Sankt Veit an der Glan is not only a tourist attraction, but also the implementation of innovative ideas. Currently, the city began construction of Austria's largest photovoltaic plant with a capacity of 1,500 kW, which will provide energy independence through renewable energy sources.
