The Argun river is a winding mountain river located in the North Caucasus. The length of river is about 147 km, the total area of the basin is 3390 sq. km Argun included in the large pool of the Terek river and has a combined feeding. Solid ice on the river is not. The presence of forest in the gorge of the river Argun allowed the Chechens to build on its coast a large number of villages and other habitations.

The river begins from the icy Northern slopes of the Caucasus mountains. Above settlements and V. Duba-Yurt river Argun formed by the merger of such rapid flows as Chanty-Argun and spherical-Argun. Each valley of the two rivers has its charm and its character.

Before reaching the plain ("Argun gate") Argun flows through the mountains in the Argun gorge. Gorge near the sources of the river almost treeless, while below it is covered with dense forests. The mountainous part of the basin of the Argun river and its tributaries occupy the Western part of the Republic - Shatoi and Itum-Kalinsky districts. This area is considered one of the first places in the Chechen settlement. It is characterized by numerous ruins of ancient villages with traditional buildings in the form of towers.

Leaving the plain, the river runs along the border between szalinski and Grozny districts to the confluence of the river Sunzha. The valley is quite densely populated. Argun, in addition to the Republic of Chechnya, also flows through the territory of Georgia, including, in the northeast region of Khevsureti.
