In the late 19th century, namely in the 60-ies, in Cherepovets there were musical and drama club. The repertoire of the group was quite diverse, it was jokes, Comedy and vaudeville, popular not only in the provincial theatres, but also in the capitals. Were staged such plays as "Balzaminov's Marriage", "Wolves and sheep", "Inspector" by Gogol. In the cultural life of the city, the performances have made the highlight. In 1899, the club became known as the theatre.

In 1914 with funds provided by the City Government. begins the construction of the building for the theater of brick. The theatre was built in 1916 and was a two-story brick building, which had two foyer with mirrors and elegant auditorium, designed in a thousand places. In Cherepovets organized two theatre group — "Art theatre" and "folk theater", which later joined the troupe, began to work in the new building. The theater itself became officially known as the "Provincial demonstration theatre. The play Gorky's "Philistines" where G. A. Belov has played a major role was the first play produced in Soviet times.

In the 1920-1940-s Cherepovets the theatre was reorganized and renamed. In wartime, the theatre has successfully toured the area, but in 1948 ceases to exist due to the complete lack of funding. And it was only decades later begins its revival. There are new people, soul who cares for the theatre. And in the industrial city in 1993 began the revival of the theatre, so necessary to the city. For several years, the theater has become a mere formality. Only in 1998 was formed troupe, and created a repertoire. The chief Director of the Cherepovets Chamber theatre is Tatyana Makarova. But due to the lack of its own scene, the theatre was forced to rent the stage mining company "ammophos". The performances staged at the "Ammophos" and presented to the audience Chamber theatre, were interesting not only Cherepovets public.

Currently, the repertoire of the theatre consists of 20 performances of various genres, from Russian classics to domestic and foreign authors of our time.
