The monument to the poet Vasyl Symonenko was installed in the city of Cherkassy in 2010. The monument is located close to the historic Shcherbina (today this building is occupied by the local civil registry office), and the newspaper "Young Cherkashin", where he worked as a young writer. The poet-sixties was also the correspondent of the newspaper "Cherkasy truth" and "working paper", his anti-Soviet poems became very popular among the free-thinkers, though it was distributed illegally, with the help of samizdat. Vasil Simonenko died at the age of 28 years after a brutal beating. This is attributed to its social activities, which was aimed at exposing the criminal activities of the NKVD.
The author of the monument is a famous sculptor Vladislav Demon. The monument to a height of two feet it took about a ton of bronze. The dynamic figure of the poet seems to be wrapped in the wing of an angel, which symbolizes the divine spark, the talent.
This monument is connected and scandal as renowned architects and experts accused the sculptor Dimona that he created two identical monument - the monument to Taras Shevchenko in novomyrhorod, Kirovohrad region and the monument to Vladimir Simonenko in Cherkassy. The similarity and indeed can be traced not only in the figures of poets, but also in composition. According to the author, he began work on these monuments almost simultaneously, however, created two completely different sculpture. While some similarities can be explained by the identity of those significant for Ukrainian culture.
