In the Central part of Chios around 16-17 km from Bhubaneswar the capital city is an abandoned medieval settlement of Anavatos. The ancient town lies at an altitude of 450 m above sea level on top of huge granite rocks, which can be accessed from one side only. The location was very convenient as it allowed them to control the West coast of the island and provided the relative safety of the local population from the constant attacks of pirates, actively hunted in the region, and other invaders.

According to one version of Anavatos was founded by the Byzantines as a settlement for the lumberjacks, who arrived here on the orders of Emperor Constantine IX Monomakh for the construction of the monastery of NEA Moni. For centuries, the Overwhelming flourishing and well defended its inhabitants. The locals are mainly engaged in agriculture, growing grapes, olives and peanuts.

Externally, the Overwhelming resembled a true fortress built close to each other two-storey stone houses with wooden roofs, low doors and small arched Windows. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the buildings is now in a dilapidated condition, but nevertheless a unified architectural appearance of the medieval city. Near the city gate, you can see the massive three-storey building, which housed an olive press, school and special water tanks. He survived and the Church of Taxiarchis and the virgin Mary.

1822 went down in history as one of the saddest pages of the Greek war of independence. Fatal this year was for residents of Anavatos. More than 400 women and children to escape the Turkish captivity, holding hands rushed down the cliff into the abyss. The village was abandoned, but after the earthquake in 1881 and was abandoned altogether.

Next to Anavatos is the Church of St. George built in the 16th century, with well-preserved frescoes. Opposite the Church there is a memorial in memory of the battle 1822.

Deserted village of Anavatos, which is also called "Mystras of the Aegean", is an important historical monument and one of the most interesting sights of the island of Chios. Today there are only a few permanent residents.
