3-4 km South of Chios town (the capital of the eponymous island) in a beautiful fertile valley, surrounded by citrus groves, are famous for this region, lies the small town of Campos is one of the most interesting and picturesque villages of the island. Ikaria is famous for its magnificent architectural ensemble and stunning scenery.

The history of the settlement leads since Byzantine times. In the same period of domination on the island of Chios by the Genoese, and later the Turks, the island prospered and became very popular among the local aristocracy, strouse their luxurious stone villas. Two and three-storey mansions, as a rule, were enclosed by high massive walls, behind which lurk in lush spacious yard.

Unfortunately, in 1822, during the infamous Chios massacre Kambos was looted and partially destroyed. Disastrous and brought a strong earthquake of 1881. Nevertheless, already in the twentieth century a considerable part of the beautiful medieval buildings were recovered, most retaining their original appearance (in some historic mansions of today, cosy hotels).

Today the island is considered an important historical and architectural monument. In spite of many wars and a devastating earthquake, and the close proximity to the capital, the island has managed to preserve the unique atmosphere of a medieval settlement, where so harmoniously combines a variety of architectural styles from different eras. Walk through the cozy streets of the old town will allow you to make a small excursion into the past and bring a lot of pleasure and unforgettable impressions.
