National Museum of fine arts of the Republic of Moldova – one of the main attractions of Chisinau. The Museum is housed in a historic building, erected in the Italian Renaissance style. Originally, it was high school for girls, which was founded under the leadership of Princess Dadiani. Here could learn only children from noble families, so the school building was erected in accordance with the aristocratic canons of the time.
The opening of the Museum of fine arts took place in 1939. The first exhibition was a large gallery of photos, which was completely lost during the Second world war. After the war the Museum was restored.
Today there are about 33 thousand exhibits, the collection covers the period from the middle ages to the present day, widely represented Moldovan art. The main value is the collection of icons of the middle ages, illustrating the development of Orthodoxy on the territory of Moldova. Great interest among the visitors is the collection of works of art – paintings, drawings, decorative and applied art. Here the collected works of Moldovan, Russian and European masters. The most valuable are the original paintings of Rembrandt, Aivazovsky, Repin, etc.
