Gateway Of India Photo: The Gateway Of India

Right in the heart of new Delhi, capital of India, is a national architectural monument called the gateway of India. The sight reminded him of the Paris arc de Triomphe, and it's not surprising considering that it was taken as a model for the construction of India Gate. They were designed by the architect Edwina by Lutyens and built in 1931 in honor of 90,000 military personnel killed in the First World war. And was originally called all India War memorial.

India gate was built of red and yellow Sandstone and granite, they are an arch, 42 meters high, the walls of which you can see engraved the names of dead soldiers. Unlike the Paris Arch, Indian not so artsy, it does not have so many small parts, so it looks pretty cautiously and strictly.

In 1971, after the conclusion of the third Anglo-Afghan war, at the initiative of Indira Gandhi at the foot of the arch was built as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal fire.

Near the monument is a dome supported by four columns, also designed by Lutyens. Initially under the dome stood a statue of British king George V, but after India gained independence, the statue was moved to Coronation Park. At the moment, was the question about the installation on the site of the monument of Gandhi.

Around the Gate and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier there is a large Park that has become a very popular place for all kinds of outings. Also it is not empty in the evening and night hours – at this time the memorial is illuminated and looks just magical.

On this site often hosts various festivals and holidays. And in 2011 in the Park near the arch, the first Festival of Kites, which attracted huge number of tourists from all over the world.
