Art collection of North Rhine-Westphalia is located in the city of düsseldorf. The Foundation of this Museum dates back to 1960, when they were purchased 88 works by Paul Klee. They became the basis of the first collection, which was presented to the audience in 1961. The original location was beautiful Schloss Jägerhof, but over time exhibits became so numerous that space in the Palace was not enough.

In 1975, the leadership of the city it was decided to expand the venues for the exhibits. For this reason, a new building was constructed, designed by renowned specialists of the architectural Bureau düsseldorf.
