The amphitheatre in El Djem (42 kilometres from Mahdia) was built in the III century and could accommodate up to 30 thousand spectators. Till our days there were three floors of arcades, stairs and benches have been restored. Under the arena is art gallery with several secret exits to the outside. In these galleries contained predatory beasts to fight the gladiators.

Now there are music festivals, concerts of Symphony orchestras and jazz festivals.
