Renaissance the gate Vigina (in translation into Russian – "Upper" or "High gate") is located outside the Ramparts of Jagiellonski, which appeared on the site of the buried city moat, until the nineteenth century surrounding the city of Gdansk. Together with a moat filled with water, were destroyed and earthworks. The gates that once served as a pass to the city from the West side, shall be considered a conditional beginning of the Royal route leading to the Green goal. Here gathered the inhabitants of the city to greet the rulers, solemnly entering through the gate Vigina.
The gate, built as a triumphal, have the main passage and two lateral passages. Over their form and design worked in 1571-1576, the Saxon architect Hans Kramer. Design of facades belongs to Willem van den Block.
The main frieze of Brahma Viginas decorated with several coats of arms, among which are the emblem of the Kingdom of Prussia, the Polish state, and to be precise, Poniatowski coat of arms, and the city of gdańsk. Bas-reliefs of coats of arms can be seen on many buildings of the city, but on the Upper gate they look the most impressive and striking size.
Of the former existence of a defensive ditch remind fixtures still on the gate. With their help, once set in motion three of the bridge that served as the passage of the ditch width of 50 meters.
