Piazza Ferrari, situated between the old part of Genoa and its business center is the main square of the city. Originally it was called the Piazza San Domenico, because on it stood the Church of St. Dominic. In the early 19th century the Church was demolished during the restoration work carried out under the guidance of architect Carlo Barabino. The current name of the area was in the late 19th century by title standing near the house of the Duke and patron of Raphael de Ferrari. In 1879 she was wearing a bronze monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, sitting on a horse, and in 1936 in the center of the square appeared the monumental fountain, who later became one of the symbols of Genoa along with La Lanterna. In 2005 was opened near metro station Ferrari.
Today Piazza Ferrari – this is the main site of Genoa for the holding of public demonstrations and concerts. On all sides it is surrounded by historic buildings, which are now popular tourist attractions. Here you can see the side of the Ducal Palace, the Church of Jesus, the Palace of the exchange, built in 1912, the main theatre Carlo Felice and the Museum of the Academy of fine arts of Liguria, founded in the mid-18th century. The last two buildings were built in the same Carlo Barabino, local native, in 1825.
