The Aquarium Of Genoa Photo: Aquarium Of Genoa

The Genoa aquarium is the largest aquarium in Italy and the second largest in Europe. Located in the old harbour of Genoa on the Cape Ponte Spinola, it covers an area of 3100 sq. m. and is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Annually over 1, 2 million people!

The construction of the aquarium was dedicated to the International Exhibition Genoa Expo'92, which in turn was organized in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America the most famous native of the city by Christopher Columbus. At that time it was the second largest aquarium in the world.

The aquarium building was designed by the architect Renzo piano. Some say it looks like a ship ready to put to sea. The interior was done by Peter Cheriefm, who was also responsible for preparing the initial exposures. In 1998 to increase the exhibition space to the aquarium was built 100 meters of the ship, connected with the main building by a covered walkway.

The original concept of the aquarium was to show the audience the underwater world of the Ligurian sea, North Atlantic and the reefs of the Caribbean sea from two points of view: what it was five centuries ago during the voyage of Columbus, and what it has become in our time.

Today, the aquarium has 70 tanks with total capacity of 6 million litres, which inhabits an incredible variety of fish, reptiles and invertebrates. The most popular aquarium residents are, of course, dolphins, sharks, seals and turtles. Here the research is conducted, the project "Been EU project" interactive learning online courses.
