Cathedral of the Intercession was built in Grodno in memory of the battle at Tsushima and Port Arthur. The terrifying brutality of the fights that can be called even in a massacre that shocked not only the Russian military. Grodno lost in Japan, many of its valiant sons. The Church began to build even before the Russo-Japanese war. Its project was developed by military engineers under the leadership of a military engineer captain Ivan Evgrafovich Saveliev, thanks to the efforts which the Church acquired the features of pseudo-Russian style, typical of the art Nouveau era. White stone lace on red background makes the Church unique and memorable. The Church was consecrated on 30 September 1907.

Pokrovsky Cathedral was built as a garrison Church, however, by coincidence, this very nice Church became the main Cathedral of a large and turbulent city of Grodno. Despite the efforts of all authorities that have held sway in Hrodna, this proud temple never was closed during the Nazi occupation, neither in Soviet times, although Soviet officials have made considerable efforts to ensure that the Church was abolished.

Today the Cathedral of the intercession has already exceeded its 100-year milestone. On the eve of the anniversary, he was again restored, renovated and shines in new splendour. There has been a tradition to ordain Grodno soldiers who died in a foreign land, of a memorial plaque in Holy virgin protection Cathedral. In 1993 was opened a memorial plaque in honor of soldiers-internationalists, who died in distant Afghan lands.
