Kornarou Square Photo: Kornarou Square

Kornarou square is one of the most popular places in the city of Heraklion. The name of the square was given in honor of the great Cretan poet, Vicenza Kornaros, who is the representative of the Cretan Renaissance.

At Kornarou square is the oldest surviving fountain city, Dating from the 16th century and known as "Bembo fountain". The fountain is named after the image of Venetian Gianmatteo Bembo. The fountain is made from pieces of ancient marble (presumably, from the fragments of a Roman sarcophagus). The façade of the building with columns and pilasters decorated with a relief of the Venetian coat of arms. In the center of the fountain is installed headless Roman statue of a man brought from Ierapetra.

Near the fountain is a sculptural composition: bronze statue of a horseman of Erotokritou and his sweetheart Aretusi (heroes of the famous poem "Eroticart" Vicenzo Kornaros, which is considered one of his best works). The sculpture is made in full size.

During the Venetian domination on the site of modern sculptural composition was now ruined Cathedral of Christ the Savior (the Savior Cathedral). It was majestic elongated structure, which managed to survive despite numerous earthquakes, repeatedly destroying Heraklion. Later, during the Ottoman Empire, the Church, like most Venetian architectural masterpieces, was converted into a mosque dedicated to the Valide Sultan. In 1960, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was destroyed.

The square also is the old Turkish pavilion, converted into a cozy coffee shop. Here you can relax, admire the Venetian fountain and drink delicious coffee.
