One of the most famous and interesting sights of Montenegro - Kanli Kula fortress, whose name translates from Turkish as "the bloody tower". It is located in the old town of Herceg Novi, in its Northern part.

This powerful structure (more than 85 meters from sea level) served as the perfect protection for the medieval city from external enemies and at the same time served as a prison, and thus got its name. Some of the inscriptions on the stone walls, made prisoners of the Bloody tower, has been preserved.

It is believed that the construction of the fortress by the Turks began in the mid-16th century, although the first discovered about it dates back to the 17th century. To name a specific time, the date of construction of this building, or rather not yet possible. Over the centuries, the Fort has been changed several times due to major restorations and reconstructions.

Huge courtyard of the fortress Kanli Kula since 1966 turned into a summer amphitheater because of its extensive renovation. To date, this stage is considered the original and largest among summer open areas on the Adriatic coast. The maximum number of spectators that can accommodate amphitheatre – 15 thousand. Although seats here only 1000. The natural scenery that create the ancient walls of the fortress, facilitate a stylized medieval theatrical performances on the stage.
