The fortress in Herceg Novi were built in the period from XV to XIX century. Three of them are located in front of the entrance leading to the city of the Strait. All built in the era of the Austrian-Bulgarian intervention of the nineteenth century. At the right hand of the ERC, on the left – Prevlaka in the center – Mamula. To our days, all three of the fortress has been preserved in its original form, the restoration they had not been.

Desert island Mamula became home to the eponymous castle. It was built on the initiative of the Austrian General. The fortress, during both world wars, served as a prison, to protect the city it has not been used.

The fortress Forte Mare and the Citadel are located in the South near the sea. The citadel is originally owned by Venetian builders, after which it was rebuilt by the Ottomans and then the Austrians. In the XVI century it was nicknamed "the Steadfast tower." The earthquake of 1979 severely damaged strengthening, leaving only the walls of the former.

Forte Mare, or otherwise "sea fortress, built between the XIV and XVII centuries on a cliff above the road running along the sea. In 1833, the fortress was reconstructed, with 1952 she served for the citizens summer cinema, then was converted into a dance club.

In the North of the old city survived another fortress, defensive Kanli Kula, known as "the bloody tower". Was erected by the forces of the Turks in the sixteenth century above sea level at 85 meters. First performed a protective function, it was later converted into a prison. In 1966 the castle was completely renovated, then it turned into a concert venue with the total number of seats per 1,000 people.

Also the Turks were built following urban fortresses: in XV-XVI centuries Spagnola was built in the North-West, on top of the mountain Baer; in the middle of XVII century – Sat Kula (tower chapel), which during the reign of the Turks served as the main entrance to the city.

The most famous city tower St. Jerome was erected in the East wall area of Herceg Novi, in 1687, when the city was liberated from the Turks by Hieronymus Corner.
