Garden Shukkei-EN was laid out in the first half of the seventeenth century, however, much like the rest of Hiroshima was wiped off the face of the earth during the atomic bombing of the city in August of 1945. So its beautiful scenery available for contemplation in the reconstruction of 1951. The garden is located in the city district of Naka, and is a protected state natural landmark.

The garden was founded in 1620 by the master of the tea ceremony Ueda Soko, who was in the service of Asano Nagakura official, a year earlier appointed by the Tokugawa Shogunate to control the Aki province and the eight counties of the province of Bingo. The center of his possession was located in the Hiroshima castle and the garden was conceived as part of the estate of a new master. Garden space was organized in such a way that, despite its small size, it managed to place many different, successive landscapes and plant more plants flowering at different times of the year. Due to its landscape diversity of the garden became known as Sucka-EN – translated "the Garden of miniature landscapes." It was believed that the garden in Hiroshima represented the West lake is a freshwater West lake Chinese city of Hangzhou.

In the garden Shukkei-EN was established pond with ten man-made Islands. The pond and the lake was surrounded by mountains, on the banks of the pond were built houses for tea ceremonies, gazebos and bridges. Bridges were also built in the image and likeness of two prominent structures: the Moon bridge in the KORAKUEN garden in Tokyo and the Bridge of eternity in Kyoto, located in the territory of the Villa of Emperor Shugakuin.

Since the beginning of the Meiji period Shukkei-EN served as the HOMESTEAD of the Asano clan. In 1884 the General headquarters of the Japanese army moved to Hiroshima castle, and Shukkei-EN for a time became the residence of the Emperor. In 1913, the garden was first opened to the public, and in 1940 it was transferred to the ownership of Hiroshima Prefecture. He is currently one of the most visited attractions in the city.
