In North-West Greece, on the shores of lake Pamvotida (known as the lake of Ioannina) is a picturesque city of Ioannina is the capital and largest settlement of the Greek Epirus. Today Janina is an important economic, transport and cultural center of Northern Greece. The city is not too spoiled by tourism, as it lies somewhat outside the popular tourist routes, although its entertaining long history and magnificent natural landscapes deserve the most attention.

One of the main attractions of Ioannina is the Turkish mosque of Fethiye. It is located in the citadel ICH-Kala (inner fortress) on the territory of the Old castle of Yanina, which was built in the early 6th century by Emperor Justinian. The Fethiye mosque was built in 1430, immediately after the conquest of Ioannina by the Turks, near the ruins built in the early 13th century Byzantine Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Originally the mosque had a wooden structure, which in 1611 was replaced by a stone structure. Our own modern view of the Fethiye mosque took place in 1795, when by decree of the legendary Ali Pasha Teplinskogo (Annenskogo) conducted a large-scale reconstruction of the mosque. Ali Pasha did Fethiye main mosque in his Palace.

In 1822, by the order of Sultan Ali Pasha was executed and his head sent to Constantinople. The headless body of the Pasha was buried near the mosque of Fethiye in the family vault. The tomb of Ali Pasha and his family members have been preserved.

Today, the Fethiye mosque is an important historical monument and a fine example of Turkish architecture.
