The Church Of Our Lady Of Suffering Photo: Church Of Our Lady Of Suffering

The Church of our lady of Suffering at the corner of via Dolorosa and the streets of al-WADA belongs to the Armenian Catholic Church. Armenian Catholics in the world – about 600 thousand, and in Jerusalem some 500 people. However, the temple is very popular among pilgrims: he notes two stations, third and fourth, the Crucifixion of Jesus.

At the third station Christians survive the fall of Jesus under the cross, the first of three. About these drops nothing is said in the Gospels, they said only a tradition, but nothing incredible here. Usually the condemned was dragged to the place of execution, not the whole crosses, and rooted to the spot beam to the posts, but to one such beam could weigh up to 50 pounds. It is logical to assume that Christ, cruelly beaten with whips before with metal inserts, exhausted.

Chapel of the third station and the Church of our lady of Suffering were restored by the efforts of the soldiers of the Polish army of General Anders. This army General was collected in 1941 on the territory of the USSR from prisoners and repressed poles upon a special agreement between the Soviet government and the Polish government in exile. Poles sent to the middle East – first in Iran, then to Palestine. Here in Jerusalem, chaplain father Stephen Parsley-Jablonski has put a lot of effort to restore the dilapidated Church on the via Dolorosa. Great help rendered him a Lieutenant Tadeusz Zielinski, a talented sculptor.

Zelinsky was among the few Polish officers, the survivors in the Soviet concentration camp "Kozelsk-1" (most were shot in 1940 in Katyn). The camp was in the Optina monastery – Orthodox monastery that was closed by the Soviet authorities. The prisoners, who kept alive the faith that lacked the image of the virgin Mary (all the objects of worship were prohibited, under pain of death). On a wooden fragment of a broken iconostasis piece of steel wire found in the debris, Zelinsky carved relief of the Madonna and Child. Then the sculptor was in the Anders army, and the icon Kozelsky of the Mother of God went with Polish soldiers in Persia, Iraq, Palestine, under Monte Cassino. She is now in the Church of St. Andrew Bobola in London.

In Jerusalem for the Church of our lady of Suffering Zelinsky has created a poignant reliefs. One depicts fallen under the weight of the cross of Jesus; the fresco angels of heaven look upon Him with horror and sadness. Above the entrance to the churchyard is the second bas – relief on it, the virgin Mary, beside herself with grief, comes to the hands of the tormented Son. Jesus meets his Mother – the theme of the fourth station of the Cross. This episode is also not described in the Gospels, but very believable.

A door leads from the chapel to the gift shop – after going through it, a tourist falls in the crypt of the Church built in 1905 on the ruins of a Byzantine building. In the crypt, under the statues of Jesus and Mary, you can see the ancient mosaic floor laid in it the image of a pair of sandals. Tell that there was a virgin Mary. Evidence, of course not, but the pilgrims it doesn't matter – they think about love, overcoming suffering, pain and fear.
