In the suburb of Kaliningrad, near the village of Maloye Isakovo, is mighty Fort No. 1, named after the famous politician – Baron Heinrich von Stein. Massive military structure was built in the years 1875-1879 and was one of twelve FORTS included in the defensive zone "Night feather of Koenigsberg".

Fort No. 1 is an elongated hexagonal structure of brick and concrete, surrounded by a moat, reaching a depth of over five feet. Three-tier Bastion had all the necessary communications in the form of steam heating, Sewerage, water and energy supplies. Also in the Fort were located two courtyards, the drawbridge (from the backside), and the third level was a six-meter ground shaft equipped with trenches and firing positions for artillery.

Originally the Fort was named Louth due to the proximity to German village Lauther (original name: Stein am Lauther Muhlenteich). In 1894, the Fort was named after the German politician of the early nineteenth century - Heinrich Friedrich Karl von Stein (image Imperial Baron can be seen on Prussian coin worth five marks).

In the early twentieth century fortification was upgraded. During the storming of Koenigsberg (April 1945) Fort Stein was not a direct threat to the Soviet army, as was at secondary positions and was taken without a fight. The last German commandant of the Fort, major General Vogel was shot private to Sergeant for refusal of surrender.

After the war the Fort was occupied by vegetable base, disbanded in the early nineties. In 1994 the family Laurusonis moved to the territory of defenses at the same time organizing the eponymous charity Foundation dedicated to the protection and restoration of the cultural landscape of the Fort. In the course of many years of restoration works was formed exhibition of ancient weapons, decorative and construction materials, household items former owners fortifications.
