Monk is the founder of the temple Jofuku-JI temple in the year 1200, was the founder of the Rinzai school Eisai, also known as the man who was brought to Japan green tea. Eisai came from China to spread his teachings, but in Kyoto, he has been ostracized by members of another influential Buddhist schools – Tendai. After this failure, he agreed to accept the offer to lead temple in kamakura and was succeeded in this post. Jofuku-JI is the oldest Zen temple in kamakura and the third among the five great Buddhist temples Gozan.

The temple was founded by the will of the HOJO Masataka, widow of the first Governor of Kamakura shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, who in 1199 he died after falling from a horse. She invited the master Eysaya, who later had in kamakura great religious influence.

Now the temple complex is not very large, but in its heyday on its territory located more than 14 small temples and buildings. The main hall of the temple (in fact, its main part) is closed to visitors. During its history, the main hall was burnt down, its original appearance was restored in the period between 1751 and 1763 for years.

Objects of worship in Jofuku-JI temple are goddess of mercy Kannon temple and the deity, the patron of children and travellers Jizo. But the main Shrine of the temple is the statue of Buddha foot magic Nyorai. In the main hall contains three Buddha statue odinnadtsatimetrovoy Kannon and two huge wooden statues of Nio – guards of the Buddha that were brought from tsurugaoka Hachiman-GU in the period of separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1872.

Behind the Church is a cemetery where buried in the cave all the high priests of the temple. Two burials dedicated to the widow HOJO Masataka and her son of Minamoto no Sanetomo killed at a young age, but the dust in these burials there. Their tombs were placed in another temple, which currently does not exist.
