Three Chinese quarters in Japan in Yokohama is the largest in Nagasaki – the oldest and Kobe are the best. Of the half million population of this city of foreign immigrants make up about 70 thousand people, mostly who came to Japan from China and Korea.
The first foreign ship arrived in the port of Kobe in 1868, after a long isolation of Japan, which lasted two and a half centuries. Foreign missionaries, merchants and immigrants has brought to life the Kobe part of the culture of their countries. Chinatown Nanking-machi began to develop immediately after the opening of the port for international trade and today is a popular destination among tourists and residents Kobe prefer to spend their lunch breaks. In the quarter there are about hundreds of Chinese restaurants and eateries serving traditional Chinese dishes, as well as shops and souvenir shops. The center of the quarter is the area of Nanjing Park, which you can enter through the gate, mounted with three of its sides and with the fourth, the North, the entrance to the area is guarded by a pair of stone lions. On the square there are figures of the twelve animal symbols of the Chinese calendar and a pavilion with stone carvings.
In the nineteenth century, the area became the center for all Chinese immigrants, who were called "people of Nanjing" and the name of the Chinatown in Kobe. In 20-ies of XX century, many Chinese left Kobe in response to Japan's actions in expanding their territories and the Second Sino-Japanese war. The outcome of the Chinese continued in the Second world war, Nanking-machi was destroyed during the bombing and then rebuilt. In 1995, the damage to the town caused the great Hanshin earthquake, but the center of Chinese culture was again restored. Today in Nanjing-machi population of about 10 thousand people.
