The Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky Photo: the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Kobryn was built on the site of mass graves of Russian soldiers killed in the battle with Napoleon's troops on 15 June 1812. After 52 years since the historic battle, which was won the first victory of Russian troops, was laid in the Church of Alexander Nevsky.

Why exactly 52 years later began the construction of the temple? There was another occasion which was required to perpetuate the abolition of serfdom. In connection with the abolition of serfdom, the Russian Emperor Alexander II was called the Liberator. It is known that Alexander Nevsky was the patron Saint of Alexander II. It was therefore decided to build a big beautiful Cathedral in honor of Alexander Nevsky – to please the king, to strengthen the Royal power and the dominance of Orthodoxy in Kobryn.

The temple is associated a mysterious story in which there are two versions. The first version of the official – in the dome of the temple was struck by lightning, caught fire, which severely damaged the temple. It was restored, but not to reconstruct the dome, and made in a former temple of the planetarium. Another version – folk. They say that the authorities decided to break the dome of the temple to Rob Kobrin symbol of the Christian faith. Been looking for a volunteer who would help to throw the rope to the dome, but could not find. And then volunteered one insurance agent who completed the task of the authorities, but soon went mad. Cobranza believe that he suffered the wrath of heaven.

Anyway was the case with domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, but in 1961 the Cathedral was converted into a planetarium, and then opened in the state archives.

In day of memory of Alexander Nevsky on 12 September 1990, the newly restored Church was consecrated and opened for parishioners.
