Lagos is a city rich in history, it is not surprising that it is filled with beautiful monuments, which mark historic events in the life of the city. Among these historical monuments is worth noting the monastery of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which is not far from the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The building is located along Rua joão bonanza, but the entrance to the monastery is in Largo Vasco Gracias.
The monastery was built in the Baroque style. The construction of the monastery Church was begun in 1463 at the initiative of Cristobal Dias. In those days, the monastery belonged to the Carmelite order and was the second monastery of the order in Portugal. Lagos was chosen for the construction because in those days it was a developed settlement on the territory of the Algarve.
XV century - the period when it was built the monastery of the Carmelites, was considered a Golden time for the city. With its location, the city was the largest port and center of trade in iron, gold, silver. In 1755, the monastery was destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake. 22 nuns were killed and about 50 nuns were injured. The epicenter of the earthquake occurred just South of Lagos, almost all villages and towns of the Algarve were destroyed. Subsequent to the earthquake, the flood also caused extensive damage to the building of the monastery. The building was restored, and the work was done by lourenço de Santa Maria, Bishop of the Algarve. In 1833, the monastery was closed.
In the middle of the XIX century the monastery was given to the municipality of Lagos. The building of the monastery was damaged again when the earthquake happened in 1969 and was again restored. The last restoration work was carried out in 2004. The facade of the Church is quite simple, the roof is made in the form of a dome. Inside the Church has one nave, a few pieces of jewelry, quite austere.
