In the early nineteenth century the Jews get official permission from the authorities to reside in the territory of Liberec. Of course, Jews and earlier settled here, but they were few. As such, the Jewish community here was not until the late eighteenth century.
For the celebration of worship at first they used three houses, and then took the decision to build the synagogue. It was built quite late compared to other Czech cities – in 1899, but was struck by all residents of the city with its grandeur and splendor. It was decorated with a tower height of 39 meters, which was raised above the Central square and distract attention from the town hall, the municipal theater, which was located nearby. Unfortunately, the synagogue was briefly delighted the members. After Kristallnacht on 10 November 1938 crazed townspeople burned down that building. However, she has remained empty for several months before this time, for many Jewish families left their homes and emigrated away from the anti-Semitic local thugs.
For the construction of the new synagogue began to look for another place. By decision of the local residents, a new building in a futuristic style was erected on the spot where stood the old synagogue. Its construction was started in 1997. Before the new structure can be seen on the sidewalk marked the tile outline of the old building.
The size of the new synagogue is 245 sq. m. This building is unique because it is the first building of its kind on the Czech Republic after the second world war.
In our time a part of the synagogue is occupied by the scientific funds of the local library.
