The ancient Inca city of Choquequirao, located in the spurs of the mountain range Salkantay at a height of 3 030 m above sea level, 98 km from Cusco. This ancient city is the sister city of Machu Picchu" because of its similarities in architecture and structure.
Choquequirao, was built by the Incas in the fifteenth century. This town had two main stages of development. This can be explained by the fact that the city of Choquequirao, was founded by a List - the ninth Inca Emperor (1438-1471), after which his son, Tupac Inca Yupanqui, becoming the tenth Emperor (1471-1493), was rebuilt and extended his life. Documents from the colonial period show that Tupac Inca Yupanqui ran Choquequirao, as his great-grandson - Tupac Sauri - confirmed ownership of this territory and neighboring lands during the Spanish colonization.
Choquequirao, was probably one of the checkpoints to the city of Vilcabamba, the last refuge of the Incas until 1572, and also the administrative center for performing political, social and economic functions. In its streets you can see the symbolic patterns of the Imperial capital, rituals, mansions for the nobility, houses for artisans, warehouses, large dormitories and farm terraces.
In the last decade, the Peruvian government is trying to attract more scientists interested in the study of the Inca culture, to restore partially excavated Choquequirao, and make it more accessible for tourists. To get here, tourists with a guide is going to cover a path length of 60 km in 4 days through one of the deepest canyons in the world, through which runs the river Apurimac.
