The Klosterneuburg monastery of the Augustinian monastery in Lower Austria, on the Danube river North of Vienna. The monastery was founded in 1114 by the Austrian Duke Leopold III and his second wife Agnes. According to the legend, Agnes lost my favorite scarf, which tore off his neck and blew a strong gust of wind. Leopold found him a few years later, on the hunt. He claimed that the virgin Mary brought him to the right place. Exactly where the scarf was found, the Abbey was founded. On the validity of such a beautiful legend is hard to judge, however, the scarf is still kept in the monastery Museum. According to another legend, the monastery was built in expiation of the sin of murder.

After his death, Leopold was buried in the Abbey, in the crypt of the main Church, the altar which is decorated with many gilded tiles of the 12th century biblical themes (the master Nicholas of Verdun). Chapel of Speciosa was consecrated in 1222 and is the oldest Gothic building in Austria.

When Archduke Maximilian III of the Abbey served as the crown of the country "as a symbol of unity of the Austrian hereditary lands. In the first half of the 15th century during the reign of Abbot George Moessinger (1418-1442), who was a friend and disciple of the Viennese astronomer John of Gmunden, was established Seminary, where he studied the heavenly bodies and created maps.

Since 1634 during the reign of the Habsburgs many of the monastery buildings were restored in the Baroque style by the architects Jacob Prandtauer, Joseph Emanuele Fischer von Erlach. In 1740, after the death of Charles VI., the reconstruction project was stopped. In 1882 began the restoration of the Church of the monastery according to the project of Friedrich von Schmidt in this period were created by two bell towers.

The most difficult period for the Abbey came in 1941. The Abbey was dissolved: the part of the monks were expelled, others sent to the army, and the rest were sent to prison or executed for anti-Nazi ideas. Today the Abbey is home to 47 of the novices, there is a Museum.
