The Caves Of Ellora Photo: Caves Ellora

29 km on Northwest from the city of Aurangabad, which is located in the Indian Maharashtra's are the caves of Ellora (or Allure). They were created during the reign of the dynasty Rashtrakuta. 34 caves carved in a monolith of one of the mountains of Caramandi, and are the epitome of achievements of the Indian cave architecture. Each cave Ellora unique and beautiful, and invested in each particle of the soul of the Indian people.

These caves were created as Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples and monasteries, the so-called Vihara and mathas, in the period from the fifth through the tenth century. So 12 out of the 34 caves are Buddhist shrines, 17 Hindu and 5 Jain.

Previously it was thought that the first was built Buddhist part of Ellora (caves 1-12) – in V-VII centuries. But later research showed that some of the Hindu caves were created in earlier times. So, this part, in the majority, consists of monastic spaces – large multi-level space, carved into the rock, some of which are decorated with images and statues of Buddha. Some sculptures are carved with such skill that they may be mistaken for wood. The most famous Buddhist cave is the 10th cave – Viśvakarmā. At its center stands a statue of Buddha with a height of 4.5 meters.

Hindu part of Ellora created in VI-VIII centuries and made in a totally different style. All the walls and ceilings of the premises of this area completely covered with bas-reliefs and sculptures of such complexity that sometimes over their design and construction worked for several generations of masters. Most striking is the 16th cave called Kailasanatha or Kaylasa. She its beauty surpasses all the rest of the cave complex. It's more of a real temple, carved in a solid rock.

Ganitsky caves were created during the IX-X centuries. In their architecture embodies the thrust of this religion to the austerity and simplicity. They surpass the other rooms in size, but, despite its simplicity, is not inferior to them in uniqueness. So in one of those caves, Indra Sabha, the ceiling carved amazing Lotus flower, and on the upper level there is the statue of the goddess of Ambika, sitting astride a lion among the mango trees Laden with fruits.

In 1983 Ellora Caves have been a UNESCO world Heritage site.
