The Koutoubia mosque, along with the Djemaa al-Fna, is the main Shrine and a symbol of Marrakech. The construction of the mosque began in 1158 under the reign of Sultan Abd al-Mumin and ended in 1190, when came to power, his grandson, Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour. Decorated with four gold plated shining balls minaret was built in a traditional Spanish-Moorish architectural style from shale Sandstone in the form of a tower with a 16-metre lantern and dome, topped by a spire.
