Arts centre of Victoria is located in Melbourne, the cultural complex of theaters and concert halls. It is here that regularly give concerts and performances by the Australian ballet company and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera house and Melbourne house.

The place where today is located the Art centre, the residents of the city has always been associated with art and entertainment – previously it housed a circus, a theater, a roller rink, cinema and dancing clubs. After the Second World war it was decided that Melbourne needed the concept of a unified cultural center, however, the development and approval of the project dragged on for almost 15 years. Only in 1960 was selected as the architect of the future – Roy Grounds, and construction began in 1973 and lasted over 10 years. In 1982 on the banks of the Yarra street St. Kilda opened concert hall Hamer hall, and two years later the Theatre building.

Unusual Art center is that and the concert hall and Theatre building are mostly underground. Hammer hall, located closer to the river, actually it was planned to put into the ground almost entirely to provide a panoramic view between the theatre, the river and Flinders street station. However, at the stage of construction of any problems with the Foundation and the building had to be lifted above the ground on three floors.

The art center consists of several divisions. The largest of them is the concert hall Hamer hall. It is a separate building, which also houses a small theater black Box. Other offices – State theatre, Drama theatre and the Studio Fairfax is located in the Theatre building. In addition, the so-called "Music Bowl Sidney Meyer" - the outdoor area, which can accommodate up to 15 thousand people, is also the responsibility of the administration of the Art center. This stadium hosts a variety of musical concerts and shows.

Project Roy Grounds included the erection above the center of a huge 115-meter spire, which was one of the first in Australia structures, designed using computer technology. The spire was installed in 1981, however, by the mid-1990s became visible traces of wear metal. The new spire that reaches 162 metres in height and conforms exactly to the previous design, established in 1996. Metal "web" of the spire resembles a ballerina's tutu and the Eiffel tower at the same time.
