Belarusian musical theatre was founded in 1970. Originally it was known as the "State theatre of musical Comedy of the Republic of Belarus". The premiere of the first performance of "the lark Sings" (composer Yuri Semenyako) was held on 17 January 1971. The early years the theatre had no premises and acted in the premises other theaters.

The music theatre was built in 1981 by the project of famous Belarusian architect F. O. Tkachuk. Around the building's perimeter, the Park is laid, which is down from the facade of the beautiful terraces. The facade is decorated with figures of five of the muses, the patrons of the theatre, made of red copper. Sculptor L. Zilbert. The interior is lavishly decorated with gilt and red velvet, which creates an unforgettable celebration.

The theatre was opened on 15 October 1981. First performance at the new stage was "die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss. It was the 12th season of the Minsk musical theatre.

For the first time on stage musical theatre staged performances of the works of Belarusian writers. Among them: "Stepan – great pan" Yuri Semenyako, "Denis Davydov Andrey Mdivani, "adventures in the castle Alphabet" Viktor Voytik, "Glass of water" Vladimir Kondrusiewicz.

The theatre's repertoire to date, features a large variety of genres: musicals, musical comedies, operettas, plays and Christmas shows for children, rock Opera, ballet, concert programs.

In 2000, the theater was renamed the Belarusian state musical theatre. In 2001 was awarded the honorary title of the Honoured collective of the Republic of Belarus. In 2009, the theater became known as the academic.
