Calvary cemetery is the oldest extant cemetery in Minsk. The exact date of the Foundation could not be determined. The surviving "Book of the Dead", which, since the eighteenth century, added the names of people buried here, it is more than 170 years, however, archaeologists believe that the cemetery about 600 years. The total area of the cemetery is about 14 hectares, the approximate number of burials – more than 30 thousand people.
Kalwaria (lat. Calvaria) – the name of places of special veneration of the Holy cross Catholic, a symbol of Calvary. Not only is the cemetery. There are processions in religious celebrations, portraying the religious mysteries of Christ's Passion and Crucifixion of Christ at Calvary. The Calvary was made to build on the hill and build on top of the Church, as a symbol of Calvary.
In 1645 Theodore wankowicz gave the land, near the road leading to Cancers, the Carmelite order for the construction of the Church of the exaltation of the Holy cross. The monks built a wooden Church, consecrated the land and began to bury in it only the most worthy, noble and rich people. Here are buried the representatives of the noble families of the Belarusian and Polish nobility: Vitkovice, Gaidukevich, Kobylinsky, Matusiewicz, Moniuszki, Niesluchowski, Petrushkevich, Pachulia, Sinchevici Stanishevsky, Checota, Shablovsky, Yurevich, Gismonti and others. Here lies Belarusian artist Walenty wankowicz, Belarusian poet Yanka Luchina, the leader of the national liberation movement Vaclav Ivanovo, a family of Vojnovica that gave the famous Minsk Red Church. Scientists say that at Calvary cemetery buried even the names of the representatives of the Radziwill family.
In 1800 the Church of the exaltation of the Holy cross was transferred to the Franciscans, who were buried in the cemetery of all the citizens of Minsk Catholic religion. In 1839 instead of dilapidated wooden Church was built a stone Calvary Church. The Church of the exaltation of the Holy cross, built in the Gothic revival style, has been preserved to the present day. He is one of the oldest Gothic churches in Minsk.
At the foot of Calvary hill in 1830 was built the gate. Gate and path leading to the top of the hill to the Church, symbolizing Calvary, embodies the idea of Salvation.
In 1967 the cemetery received the status of historical and cultural heritage of the city of Minsk. In 2001, the cemetery received the status of historical and cultural values and international values.
