National theatre of Miskolc is the main theatre of the city and the oldest theatre in Hungary. Today's building was erected on the site burned down in mickelsson fire July 19, 1843 theatre built in Miskolc in the period from 1819 po years. It was the second made entirely of stone theatre in Hungary (the first was in Cluj-Napoca). The construction of a new theatre building in the style of classicism (exterior) and neo-Baroque (interior) was launched on 3 September 1847 according to the plans of Joseph Cassano on the funds from insurance payments and social contributions, but a year later suspended because of the revolution of 1848. In 1850, after his visit to Miskolc Emperor Franz Joseph I, the construction was resumed, and, finally, 3 September 1857, the theatre was opened. For several years the lower floors of the building were occupied by shops (the theatre was partially funded from rent), and the upper levels are home to casinos International.

In 1880 the building was renovated and expanded, they built a high tower with the famous clock that beat every time the performance begins. In 1914 the theatre, formerly part of the joint-stock company, became the property of the municipality of Miskolc.

In 1990, the theater was waiting for a new reconstruction of the area almost doubled to 16,000 square meters housed five separate halls, and on the ground floor was opened theatre Museum dedicated to the history of Miskolc.

Every year at the national theatre is a major Opera festival, gathering of fans of great singing from all over Europe.
