Căpriana monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Moldova, located 40 km from Chisinau, in the eponymous village.
The monastery was built of wood in 1429. A century later, under the patronage of the representative of the Moldavian nobility – Peter Rares, was erected a large stone Church of the assumption on the type of the medieval Church, which today is the main structure of Căpriana monastery complex. However, after the reconstruction in 1820 from the former building remains only the apse is richly decorated. At the same time, the area of the Church was extended by annexe walls, pyramidal bell tower with nine bells and a big drum with a dome.
In 1840 near assumption Church erected St. George's Church, in the style of late Baroque, and in 1903 Nicholas, the type of medieval Moldavian churches.
In Căpriana monastery was one of the most respected and biggest libraries at that time on the territory of Moldova, where treasured valuable manuscripts, gifts and offerings from notable persons.
In 1947 the Căpriana monastery was closed, all the monks dispersed, and the building was given to the needs of the children's tuberculosis hospital. However, the date of the formal closing of the monastery is 1962. In the early nineties of the last century, the Căpriana monastery was returned to believers, restoration work began on the restoration of temples.
The monastery is the burial of the head of the Bessarabian diocese of 1813 and 1821 - Metropolitan Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni, which has made an invaluable contribution to the development of Orthodoxy and culture of Moldova.
Not far from the monastery you can find the oak of Stephen the Great, at the base of which, according to legend, he was resting after one of the battles.
