The longest river in Montenegro – Tara, its length is 144 kilometers. The gorge along the river Tara in length is 80 kilometers and a depth of 1300 meters. In Europe, this canyon is the deepest. Among the world of canyons in size it is second only to the Grand Canyon, which is located in the US.

The Tara canyon on one side surrounded by mountains Durmitor and Chinaeven, and on the other side of the canyon is sandwiched between the mountains Zlatni Bor and Lubina. Thus, the canyon is part of the Montenegrin national Park Durmitor. This area of the canyon and the Park was included in the UNESCO world heritage list in 1980. And in 1937, was built đurđevića bridge famous through the deep canyon of the river Tara. For a long time it was the only road connecting the North and South of Montenegro.

Water in the river is saturated with oxygen, which causes it to change color from deep emerald green to sparkling penise-white. The average water temperature in the river is not above 11 °C.

Flora and fauna in the valley of the Tara river is rich in various kinds of trees. Among others, there are rare species such as black pine, black ash, Oriental hornbeam, Linden and elm. If you climb up the hill on the rocks you can see cork oak trees, hornbeams, maples and beeches. Surpassing the milestone of 1000 meters on the territory grow spruce and fir. Also a unique attraction of the valley of the Tara river can be called a virgin forest of Black pine, which is still preserved in the European territory. The trees here are extremely high (some pines grew to 50 meters), their age is about 400 years. Coastal forests are rich in carnivores such as brown bears and wolves, as well as in the valley there are about 130 different species of birds.

Moreover, in the river valley are ancient monasteries: Devolia, Dobrilovina and the monastery of St. Michael the Archangel of the thirteenth century. He is famous because inside is the altar of Mithras, the Phoenician God associated with friendliness, harmony and light of the sun.
