One of the five Planetariums, named after the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, is located in the beautiful city of Mumbai (Bombay), on the street Annie Besant. It is part of the scientific-cultural centre of Nehru, established in 1972. The building of the planetarium was opened in a solemn ceremony with the participation of Indira Gandhi on March 3, 1977.

The building of the planetarium is a large hexagonal structure with a convex roof. The project was designed by the famous Indian architect J. M. Kadri.
