In the Central part of the Aegean sea is one of the most picturesque Islands of the Cyclades - Mykonos. The island is famous not only for its magnificent beaches, but also a huge number of Church buildings, of which there are about 400.
In a picturesque place near the sea shore is one of the most famous and beautiful churches of Mykonos – the Church of Panagia Paraportiani. Its name in translation from Greek language means literally "the mother of God at the gates". Probably, this name is not accidental, since in reality the Church was built at the entrance to the medieval fortress, which, unfortunately, has not survived to our days. The feature of this amazing architectural structure is actually that it consists of five small churches that were built next to and on top of already existing buildings.
The center of the temple complex was the Church of the Holy Estatica, the construction of which began in the second half of the 15th century. Over time, around the main building were erected three churches – St. Sozontes, Ne. Anargyroi and St. Anastasia. Together they became the Foundation for fifth facilities - the Church of the virgin Mary, which was completed in the 17th century. The whitewashed Church of Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most photographed landmarks and one of the most famous architectural structures in Greece. The Church is located in the historical part of the city Choirs in the Castro district and is the hallmark of Mykonos.
